Ideas for Kid's Fiction Books

Writing for children takes a special kind of writing skill. Not only do you need to be aware of the words that you use and whether or not they are grade level correct, you must also try to imagine (or maybe remember) what it was like to be a kid. You never know what a kid will like. I mean, whoever expected Diary of a Wimpy Kid to be a best seller?

Searching For The "Write" Idea

There's nothing like watching a child reading a good fiction book. You know the kind. The ones that makes the kid ask if they can read just one more chapter before bedtime. They are the ones that make a child laugh for joy or cry for a lost hero. Because if a fiction book can't bring out some emotion, then what's the point?

These are the books kids share with their neighbors and friends with sheer joy. And watching that process is an extraordinay experience. But, yes, there is something better! It's writing one of those books that makes children from one side of the world to the other feel like part of one large family.

SAMPLE #1: (You will receive ten ideas in this format)

The Boy Who Built A Robot In His Basement

Poindexter Pimplepick isn't your ordinary boy. He's a genius of sorts. He's always building something in his basement workshop. Last year it was a lawnmower that mowed the yard by remote control. That worked fine until it got out of control and chewed up his mom's vegetable garden. The year before that it was an automatic necktie tying machine. That only lasted a day before it nearly strangled Grandpa Wilson. But this was going to be his greatest invention. A robot! And surely nothing could go wrong this time. Could it?

CHARACTERS

Poindexter may be nerdy but he must be loveable to all types of readers. He is, of course, your main character and you must take care in developing him. Supporting characters could be any number of people. Mother and father? Grandpa? Best friends? (Yes, even nerds have friends.) Perhaps a science teacher as Poindexter could be building his robot for the science fair. Antagonists could range from an older brother or sister (remember that an antagonist doesn't always translate into bad or evil) or the school yard bully who loves to pick on nerds. (Could the robot try and defend Poindexter against the bully?) Lots of different possibilities here. Of course, the robot should also play into the picture as a supporting character. Lots of room for fun and hilarity here, so don't get too serious.

WRITER'S TIP:

As you write your story (and even more importantly during your edit) make sure you use descriptive words instead of generalizing. For example: if you had two weasels and a fox standing by a tree discussing dinner don't just say "The two weasels looked at the fox as they stood beneath the big tree and wondered what he might bring them for dinner. It was his turn, of course." Instead try: Willie and Cecil lingered beneath the umbrella of the elm tree and just knew that Freddy the Fox had outwitted them again. Now what would they do about dinner?"

SAMPLE #2:

Eskimos In Miami

Wouldn't you know it? The Makoktuk family, who live in the coldest regions of the north, decide they are tired of the cold. That means it must be time for a trip down south. (And we don't mean down south to Nome, Alaska.) They visit a travel agent and are suddenly packing their swimsuits and sunglasses and flying down to Miami, Florida for a week's vacation in the warm sun. But you wouldn't you know it? There really is no place like home. Not only do they get sunburned and sand in their clothes, but there are too many people and wouldn't you know it, they even have trouble finding enough ice cubes to cool their room!

CHARACTERS

Your main characters would be the members of the Eskimo family. (I grabbed their name by looking for Eskimo words on the internet, so if do a little surfing of your own you'd like to find another name.) I would suggest a father, a mother and at least two children, a boy and a girl. By doing this you are including characters that all potential readers could identify with and are not restricting the book to either just male or female readers. You could also try writing this one as a rhyming picture book. Possible antagonists could include an elderly grandmother or grandfather who comes on the trip and hates every minute of it. Of course, no one wants to admit that they are not having fun which makes the problem even worse. Or you might include a hotel owner who isn't fond of having the family stay at his classy resort hotel.

WRITER'S TIP:

You always need to introduce your characters and plot quickly as to keep the readers interest and make them want to keep reading. In longer books you need to do this by the end of the first chapter. In shorter books (i.e. picture book) you need to do so within the first couple of pages.
